Inspired by the success of last fall’s event, the DTA announced today that there will be a another unique opportunity for members of the community in the near future! For those folks who have ever wondered what it’s like to drive a bus, the “Your Turn to Drive” event is back for round two and will take place Friday May 19th from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm, and May 20th from 10:00 am – 1:30 PM. The event will take Place at the Heritage Center parking lot. This event was inspired by the need to hire more drivers as ridership and demand for DTA service have increased each month.
Those with a valid driver’s license and interested in test driving a bus can sign up to participate. The event will take place on the western side of the Heritage Center parking lot on a closed course. Participants will learn how to safely operate a bus, navigate a mock intersection, and get a feel for what operating a $500,000 thirty-two-thousand-pound ****vehicle is like. A STRIDE Paratransit Vehicle will also be on-site to provide a chance to drive that format as well. Those who enjoy the test drive can apply on the spot. Paid training, great benefits, and more await those hired as DTA bus operators.
DTA General Manager Rod Fournier said “We are excited to invite the public back to take a bus for a test drive. Given March was our highest ridership month since March of 2020, and the exciting initiatives we have planned for the rest of the year, now is the perfect time to get folks in the driver seat, and add some team members to our workforce.” Fournier also mentioned that there is limited space, and those interested in taking a test drive should visit DuluthTransit.com to sign up for a time slot. Questions about the event can be directed to @duluthtransit.com, or calling 218-623-4314.
**Members of the media are invited to set up a story where reporters test drive the bus, which could serve as a unique/interactive way to capture this exciting story – We would prefer any press inquiries be conducted during this event, or prior by appointment**
