The University of Wisconsin-Superior will host 85 talented high school singers from throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota for a performance of the first half of Mozart’s Requiem as a part of the 36th Chorfest High School Honor Choir Festival on Thursday, Nov. 7.

“Chorfest is unique among high school honor festivals because it allows students to perform large choral and orchestral works with an orchestra consisting of some of the best musicians in the Twin Ports,” said Michael Fuchs, UW-Superior director of choral activities. “This is an opportunity that is not available in many high schools and smaller communities, and we are thrilled to provide an avenue through which students from the region can experience this wonderful music.”

This event, which gets underway at 9 a.m., features a day of rehearsals, tours and masterclasses. Conductors and clinicians include Fuchs, and UW-Superior colleagues Vicki Fingalson, professor of voice and director of opera workshop, and Jeffrey Madison, senior lecturer of voice and music history.

The day concludes with a concert at 7 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Auditorium. Chorfest participants, along with 18 UW-Superior singers, will perform the first half of Mozart’s Requiem. The concert will also feature UW-Superior Chorale and Singers performing works by William Byrd, Arvo Pärt, and Shawn Kirchner. This concert is open to the community.

“Mozart’s Requiem is one of the greatest choral and orchestral masterworks written,” said Fuchs. “It is a piece with a tremendous amount of depth, beauty, and spirituality. The UWS Chorus and Orchestra performed the entire work last spring. This was a great opportunity to sing this immortal piece with area high school vocalists.”

Tickets, which can be purchased with cash or check at the door, are $5 adults, $3 seniors and free for students. The Thorpe Langley Auditorium is located in Old Main, 1710 Weeks Ave. For questions or additional information, call (715) 394-8115 or email music@uwsuper.edu.
