The University of Wisconsin-Superior has been named a Military Friendly® School for the ninth year. This is in recognition of the university’s efforts to assist military personnel, veterans and their family members in competing a college education.
“Being recognized for nine straight years is a testament to UW-Superior’s commitment to our military service members,” said Monte Stewart, coordinator for UW-Superior’s Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center. “UW-Superior continues to improve upon our already outstanding reputation of inclusive excellence, and this continuous recognition shows we are providing the necessary services to our military and veteran students and committing to each and every student’s individualized needs.”
G.I. Jobs® found that “UW-Superior is dedicated to assisting military members in their college success and provides services that meet their needs in transitioning to higher education. A dedicated staff is here to assist students with securing their GI Bill benefits and navigating the admissions process. Based on academic policies, veteran students may receive transfer credit (maximum 32 semester credits) for education and some certain specialized training programs completed while in military. With a veteran center located on campus, veterans will find a relaxing atmosphere, a comfortable place to study and resources that can help answer questions about campus and community support.”
UW-Superior received high marks for its academics policies and compliance, admissions and orientation and culture and commitment. UW-Superior features a Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center that provides a wide range of support programming for veterans of all ages.
“The Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center is committed to easing the higher education transition for our service members,” said Stewart. “Many of our veteran students are coming directly from active duty and jumping right into school, so it’s very important for the university to commit to easing the transition to college but also help with the transition back into civilian life after the military.”
Currently more than 130 students receive GI Bill benefits on campus. Military service members, veterans and their families make up more than 22 percent of the entire student body. UW-Superior also provides a veterans benefits coordinator and office to help veterans understand their government education benefits and to assist with financial arrangements. The university also tries to maximize the number of military training and credits that veterans can transfer to UW-Superior to apply toward their university degrees.
