The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department presents its annual gala concert Superior Voices on Tuesday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Thorpe Langley Auditorium. Proceeds from the event go toward music scholarships at UW-Superior.

This concert will be a celebration of vocal music, and will feature UW-Superior Opera Workshop, Acappella and Chamber Choirs and Voice Faculty.

“This year’s concert will include memorable musical moments from operetta and musical theater, including “The Merry Widow,” “Candide,” “The Music Man,” “Ruddigore,” Copland’s “The Tenderland” and Bernstein’s “Mass,” said  Dr. Vicki Fingalson Madison, Associate Professor of Voice and Director of Opera Workshop at UW-Superior. “Please join us for one of our favorite concerts of the year.”

With a host of classic songs planned, the concert offers an array of musical stylings.

“As a choir director who’s done a bit of opera chorus and musical theater work, it’s hard not to be inspired by opera choruses,” said Dr. Richard Robbins, Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at UW-Superior. “Often, composers choose to use full choral forces for their ‘big numbers’ – scenes that are filled with emotional weight, or the finales of individual acts or the entire show. As such, opera choruses are often written to evoke a lot of emotions from the audience. I love them.”

The 50-member choir is open to UW-Superior students of any major. The university also offers a degree in Vocal Performance. The size of the choir adds depth to the numerous classic songs planned for the concert.

“From a choral perspective, I think that the audience should pay attention to the wonderful sound of a large group of singers exploring this stage repertoire and approaching their choral music from a theatrical or dramatic perspective,” said Dr. Richard Robbins, Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at UW-Superior.

Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $10. The Thorpe Langley Auditorium is located in Old Main on the UW-Superior campus.
