The position of Bench Technician includes setup, programming, troubleshooting, and repair of communication equipment including pagers, portable and mobile electronic equipment. This requires superior technical, troubleshooting, and repair skills. This position may be scheduled to assist in the field for work as needed.
Role and Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Setup, programming, and checkout of equipment Troubleshooting and repair to the component level
- Final checkout and training with customer
- Service of electronic equipment preventive maintenance, alignment and clean up
- Maintain all appropriate and necessary paperwork and documentation Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
- The Bench Technician works with a high degree of independence under broad program guidelines and general supervision of the Technical Services Manager.

Work Environment (Essential Functions)
Work is performed in various settings: primarily in an office environment at DSC communications, but also at customer locations. There is also travel to and from local and regional trainings, meetings and conferences or similar. Incumbent works with radios, spectrum analyzers, test equipment, laptop computers, network servers, desktop computers, remote connectivity including VPN and remote desktop, telephones, and other general office equipment that require detailed dexterity. Work involves keyboarding and manual dexterity, and also entails general reaching, stretching, and lifting of office supplies, and program equipment, such as paper, binders, files, phone sets, pamphlets, brochures, and display boards. Some walking, bending, carrying and moving program equipment and materials is required. Pulling cable is also required.
Knowledge Of:
- Principles and techniques of radio systems technology, programming and analysis.
- Principles and techniques of computer technology, IP and Networking.
- Report preparation, research methods, and statistical principles.
- Application and interpretation of DSC policies and procedures as well as local, state, and federal laws and regulations relevant to the program area.
Work Experience
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and ability required to successfully perform the job will be considered. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Experience preferred in radio systems technology or a related field with emphasis on systems maintenance, trouble-shooting and programming.
Preferred Education
· Associate’s degree with major course work in communications technology or a related field may substitute for the required experience.
Preferred Licenses/Certifications
· Certified on IP and Networking applications through the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP) or equivalent.
· Driver's License (Required)
