    Job Description

    WRITTEN EXAM: Monday, January 6, 2025 @ 3 pm or Tuesday, January 7, 2025 @ 9 am.
    ORAL EXAM (Interview): Saturday, January 25, 2025.
    PHYSICAL READINESS TEST (PRT):  Date and Time TBD.
    ***Candidates who took and passed the written test in either the September 2024  police officer process will not be required to take the written test again during this process.*** 

    DEFINITION:
    A Police officer performs a wide variety of duties connected with general police work including investigation, general enforcement of laws and ordinances in the City of Superior and providing other various types of assistance to include advancing the mission of the Superior Police Department. The entry level Police Officer must successfully complete a 18 week recruit academy (if not Wisconsin certified) and 14 weeks of on-the-job-field training. The City will pay you while you attend the recruit academy AND pay for the recruit academy!

    Work Schedule: Patrol Officers currently work 12 hour shifts, 4 days on – 4 days off (built in overtime included).

    A Lateral Transfer Police Officer must have one year of full-time law enforcement experience and be eligible to become a Certified Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer prior to hire. Upon hire, a Lateral Transfer Police Officer will be credited with their years of full-time law enforcement for the purposes of wage placement, vacation accrual, and minimum experience for Detective application. The Lateral Transfer Police Officer must successfully complete 14 weeks of on-the-job field training, in addition to passing a 12 month probationary period.

    EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

    Knowledges: Working knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement; laws and ordinances governing local law enforcement; first aid; and geography of the City of Superior and surrounding area.  Some knowledge of court proceedings and proper investigative practices.
    Abilities: Ability to successfully complete a recruit academy (if not already Wisconsin certified), and successfully complete a 14 week on-the job field training program; prepare clear and concise reports; operate a computer; speak clearly and effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department personnel and the general public; provide credible testimony in a court of law; use a firearm and other equipment; drive a police vehicle; work under adverse weather conditions; work varied shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends; and use good judgment, integrity and tact. 

    REQUIREMENTS:
    Training and Experience: Must be a U.S. citizen. Must have no serious criminal convictions. Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire. Must have earned a high school diploma or GED and completed 60 semester units of college prior to the written test.  Must have accurate color vision. Must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20/200 in each eye corrected to 20/20 vision in one eye and not worse than 20/40 vision in the other eye. A satisfactory history of soft contact lens wear for more than one year with vision corrected to 20/20 in one eye and no worse than 20/40 in the other eye, is also accepted.                                            
     
    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    License Requirement: Must become certified as a State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer within one year of hire date and maintain such certification.
    Oath of Office Requirement: Will be required to take an oath of office.
    Driver License Requirement: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
    Residency Requirement: Must reside anywhere within a forty-five minute response time to the corporate limits of the City of Superior within 6 months of completion of probationary period.
    Background Investigation Requirement: Must pass a detailed background investigation prior to hire.
    Post Job Offer Psychological Examination Requirement: Must pass a psychological exam for the position prior to hire.
    Post Job Offer Medical Examination Requirement: Must pass medical exam for specified occupational grouping and drug screen prior to hire.

    **ATTACH THE FOLLOWING WITH YOUR COMPLETED APPLICATION:
    1. A photocopy of college transcripts with your name on them (must show at least 60 *accredited credits completed in ANY field of study). "CERTIFIED" transcripts will subsequently be required from all candidates who make it to the eligible hire list.
    2. A copy of your DD-214 if you are a veteran.
    3. A copy of your Wisconsin Department of Justice Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification (if you are currently Wisconsin certified).
    If you do not submit a copy of your college transcripts verifying at least 60 accredited credits completed, you will NOT be considered qualified to continue in our testing process.

    *The WLESB manual defines 'Accredited Credits' as: "Associate degree level credits or higher that have been awarded by a member of the WI Technical College System or by its equivalent in another state or by a private or state college or university with current membership in good standing in a predominant, national or regional accrediting organization for private or state colleges or universities recognized by the US Department of Education." The manual further states, "Colleges and universities that are accredited by an accrediting agency or association that is acknowledged by the United States Secretary of Education are acceptable to the Board as a source of college credit. Identification of colleges and universities accredited by accrediting agencies approved by the US Department of Education is available at: http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation
    ."

    EXAMINATION PROCESS:  PLEASE SAVE THE DATES!!!!!!!!!!!!! 
     
    WRITTEN EXAM "The National Police Officer Selection Test" (POST).- by Stanard & Associates, Inc.
    Monday, January 6, 2025 at 3 p.m. or  Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 9:00 am. You will be able to sign up for either date. The exam will take approximately 2 hours. 
    The exam will be given in Superior only.  Exam notices will be emailed to qualified applicants at the email address listed on their application.  

    INTERVIEWS:  Will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025in Superior, Wisconsin. PHYSICAL READINESS TESTING WILL BE HELD ON A DATE YET TO BE DETERMINED. We will be giving the Law Enforcement Academy Physical Readiness Test (PRT). A link to the PRT details is found here: https://wilenet.widoj.gov/training-standards/agency-administered-entry-prts  This is the same exam that you would be required to pass at the recruit academy. Please read through the exam and save the link so you can practice and be prepared for the test.

    Eligible applicants must score among the top 50 passing candidates on the written test to continue in the process. Successful candidates must then pass an interview and a physical readiness test to be placed on the eligible list.  Veteran's Preference points will be assigned prior to calculating the final score for ranking on the eligible list.  Following these tests, candidates on the certified hire list must complete and pass a background investigation to be considered for appointment.  Finally, candidates must pass a psychological examination, post job offer medical examination and drug screen to receive a probationary appointment.
     
    The eligible list established through this process will be used for filling vacancies for a two year period from the date the list is established.  The list can be extended up to 3 years by the Superior Police and Fire Commission.
