Time Arc Theatre presents, “You Can’t Keep A Good Man Down, or She Tried to Loathe Him But She Just Couldn’t Do It,” a melodrama in two acts. Set in 1893 Superior, the villainous Malachi Sandbar arrives in Superior with dastardly plans. While walking past a large house, he discovers the beautiful Lily Virtue Parker, the some-day-rich daughter of Captain Charles Parker and aims to force her to marry him and gain her inheritance. Other characters include Lily’s protective maid, Elsie; Lily’s betrothed, the simple but loving Anders; the unwilling accomplice, Fanny Devine, owner of the Gem Music Hall; a couple of the Gem’s regulars and dance hall girls; and the mysterious actor from Chicago, John Williams, who is on a mission of his own. Written by Kathy Laakso with music composed by Bruce Nelson, the melodrama is a collaboration between the two of them, both 1973 South Shore High School graduates. Because Time Arc has no understudies so wearing of masks during the performances is strongly encouraged to protect the actors.
