Lake Superior Day is a special day each July that encourages people and communities to take an active interest in protecting the lake as well as enjoying the many opportunities Lake Superior offers. Every year, communities around Lake Superior in the U.S. and Canada celebrate this day. Youth and adults from the Communities for Youth Committee, here in Superior, are co-sponsoring and working on this celebration. The event is free of charge and open to the public.
Superior's Lake Superior Day celebration will take place on July 15th from 12:30-4:00 p.m. at the Barker's Island Festival Park. The afternoon celebration will include opening ceremonies, Native American drum circle, Barker's Island clean-up, games, Dragon Boat race, live music, and more! Join in the Barker's Island clean-up and enjoy a free hot dog lunch for your efforts. A ''trash trophy'' will also be awarded for the most trash collected. The Lake Superior Writers will be holding a special Lake Superior Reading from 12:30-1:00 p.m.
A number of local organizations will be on hand to share information about Lake Superior including the Great Lakes Aquarium, the Coast Guard, the Maritime Museum, the Great Lakes Bi-National Forum, Clean Wisconsin Water Program, and the Great Lakes Fleet. The Great Lakes Fleet will be also be recruiting for positions within the company.
Lake Superior Day is also sponsoring an essay contest that is open to any youth. In 100 words or less, youth should explain 1) What Lake Superior means to me, 2) What I can do to help protect Lake Superior, and 3) What I think my community should do to protect Lake Superior. There is elementary, middle school, and high school divisions and division winners will each receive a $25 Simon card. Division winners will also have an opportunity to read their essay at Lake Superior Day on July 16th. Entry deadline is July 6th!
