Join Julie Dawson, assistant professor in the Department of Horticulture at University of Wisconsin-Madison, for one of Fairlawn's Garden Talks. Many gardeners and chefs choose to use heirloom vegetable varieties known for their flavor. While we may think of heirlooms as something handed down from the past, in fact, these varieties are not static, and need to be continuously cultivated and selected for current climate, pest and pathogen pressures. There is growing interest among plant breeders, farmers and gardeners in developing "modern heirlooms" which would have excellent flavor and better adaptation to current agricultural systems. This talk will focus on the creation, conservation and selection of varieties for local food systems. Cost: $15 per person. Call 715-394-5712 for more information.
