Summer isn’t the only time to be an outdoor enthusiast.
Instead of flying south for the winter, head north this year to find the most fun. Along the shores of Lake Superior, the area abounds with trails and ski hills for authentic winter fun.
If there’s a summer outdoor activity you love to do on the north shore, Douglas County has a winter activity for you.
Like Long Distance Running? Try Skiing
When you head to Douglas County, you’ll have access to more than 30 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails for all skill levels.
The Douglas County Forest is home to 10 miles of scenic trails, overlooking the St. Croix River and pine forests. For skate skiing – beginner to expert – visit the City of Superior Municipal Forest Ski Trails. Or head to the Afterhours Ski Trail in the Brule River State Forest for a variety of ski trails and even a heated shelter to keep warm.
Like Hiking? Try Snowshoeing
Douglas County is home to the longest hiking trail in the United States, the North Country National Scenic Trail, which spans from North Dakota to New York. Covered with soft, fluffy snow in the winter, that trail becomes a scenic snowshoe haven.
Or, hit the Brule River State Forest for the Old Historical Bayfield Hiking/Snowshoe Trail, complete with an overlook of Lake Superior.
Like Roller Skating? Try Ice Skating
Nothing says classic Wisconsin winter like pond hockey. Watch or play a few games Jan. 26 through 28 during the Lake Superior Ice Festival, which celebrates all that is good about the region.
This year’s festival is set to feature fireworks, ice sculptures, an ice bar, bonfires, family activities, a craft fair and a charity Boot Hockey Game between the Superior Fire and Police Departments.
Like Four-Wheeling? Try Snowmobiling
Explore Douglas County on a snowmobile along more than 300 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. It’s the best way to feel like you’re in a winter wonderland, and maybe even meet friendly people along the way.

During the festival, the Great Lakes Pond Hockey Classic will see women’s, open and senior division teams battle it out on the largest fresh-water pond in the U.S. All proceeds will go to youth hockey.
