You don’t need a boat to hit the water on the north shore. Just ask Jared Munch.

At 23, Jared circled Lake Superior by paddleboard, according to the Duluth News Tribune.

While 1,350 miles might be a bit extreme, kayaking and stand up paddleboarding (SUP) are taking the Superior area by storm.

You don’t need to buy a paddleboard or kayak to partake, either. Businesses like Brule River Canoe Rental in Brule or North Shore SUP in Superior offer paddleboarding and kayaking rentals, plus instructions, guided tours, sunset paddles, full moon paddles, and more.

Here are some reasons to try one of these fun water activities:

    1. They’re a Great Workout
Paddleboarding might look easy, but it can be a full-body workout. It requires an immense amount of strength and balance. Same with kayaking – just one hour can burn over 350 calories, depending on how hard you paddle. It’s a workout for your entire core, not just your arms.

    2. They’re a Great Way to Enjoy the Outdoors
Kayaking and SUP help you reach parts of a body of water you’d never see otherwise. In a society full of technology, they’re simple ways to unplug and be fully present in the world around you. Paddling along glassy water can be a tranquil experience you have to see to understand. And, there’s nothing better than getting in the water on a hot summer day.

    3. They’re a Fun Group Activity
If you’re searching for something to do with your friends or significant other while on vacation, rent some kayaks or paddle boards and take to the water. Get competitive or use it as a way to build camaraderie. Either way, you’ll have a good time, and strengthen friendships while doing it.
