And When She Got There, the Cupboard Was Bare...

Summertime is here, time for cookouts, BBQs & picnics with friends and family. Unfortunately, summertime is also a time when the stores at local food-shelves see a drop in donations and supplies get low.

You can help. As you are out in the community this summer you will find many opportunities to donate non-perishable food items to help restock our local food-shelves, food banks and pantries. M & I Bank at 1425 Tower Avenue in Superior, is collecting food for Second Harvest Food Bank every Monday in June. June 21st is United Way’s national “Day of Action” and United Way of Superior - Douglas County along with various groups and organizations will be hosting “drives” collecting food, cleaning products, personal hygiene products and more, all over our community. Lance & Billy’s “Hunger Takes No Holiday” will be collecting food and cash donations through June 30th at different events. Super One Foods even has bags pre-packed and ready to go directly to Second Harvest. This year Superior’s Independence Day Parade takes on a new twist, all along the parade route there will be volunteers collecting donations (food and money) that will directly support food shelves and those in need right here in our community. Food shelf donations will also be collected at the Superior's Independence Day Car Show.

If you don’t see an opportunity – create one! Gardening? Plant an extra row in your garden this year to donate to the food bank. Gathering for a company picnic? Send a memo asking everyone to bring a can of vegetables. Having friends over for a BBQ and everyone is asking “what can I bring?” answer, “a donation for the food shelf”. Maybe you’re congregating for a family reunion? Make it a challenge – who can bring the most cans of Tuna? Or build the tallest tower from boxes of macaroni & cheese (bring your own Mac n’ cheese, of course). Use your imagination and make it fun.

What to do with donations? For “Day of Action” donations, contact Heather at United Way of Superior -Douglas County 715-394-2733 to arrange a pick up or delivery. “Hunger Takes no Holiday” financial donations may be mailed to: Hunger Takes No Holiday c/o The Chamber 205 Belknap St. Superior, WI or contact dleigh1273@aol.com with questions. They are nearing their goal and nearing the end of this season’s collection – Just five dollars will supply FIFTY dollars worth of food. With donations for Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank contact 218-727-5653. Donations may be brought directly to Salvation Army 916 Hughitt Avenue in Superior. You may also contact area churches to inquire where donations are needed.

Together we can make a difference and be sure that when she gets there, Mother Hubbard’s cupboard WON’T be bare.
